The LCCG Market Benchmark was first published in 2022 as part of the Low Carbon Concrete Routemap. It was developed to provide a mechanism for rating the embodied carbon of concrete used across the UK market, based on strength class. Since its introduction, the benchmark has been updated annually by the LCCG in collaboration with the MPA.
Over the last 12 months, a sub-group of the LCCG, led by Helen McGarry (Design ID), Aneeta Mary Joseph (Mott MacDonald), and Simon Perks (AtkinsRéalis), with support from Bruce Martin (Expedition Engineering) and expert reviewers Michael Drewniok and Kunal Kansara, has been gathering an updated dataset of UK concrete embodied carbon data to develop the LCCG Market Benchmark 2026. The 2023, 2024, 2025, and 2026 versions of the LCCG Market Benchmark are available at the bottom of this page.
The Market Benchmark is dynamic and evolves as the embodied carbon of concrete supplied to the market changes. Alongside this, alternative static benchmarks are also published by others.
The dynamic Market Benchmark is useful for assessing concrete against what is currently specified and supplied in the market, while the static benchmarks are well suited to planning emissions reductions on the pathway to Net Zero. Refer to further guidance on the use of these different benchmarks here.
This note presents the 2026 LCCG Market Benchmark update, based on data provided by the MPA and accounting for approximately 55% of the ready-mixed concrete produced in the UK in 2025.
